North American Manx Awards presented 8 July 2009

The North American Manx Awards were presented at a ceremony hosted by Education Minister Anne Craine MHK in the Barrool Suite, Douglas, on Tuesday.

Making the presentations was Sally Dahlquist, President of the North American Manx Association, which has honoured outstanding achievements by young people since the awards were commissioned to mark Tynwald's Millennium year, 1979.

The awards - always presented during the week of the open-air sitting of Tynwald - have traditionally recognised the achievements of those under 18, with a silver medal for each winner. However, two new awards were added this year to recognise older recipients.

The categories were: 1. Manx music 2. Manx art and crafts 3. Manx language 4. Outstanding contribution to Manx culture (a) By a student under the age of 18 (b) By a student over the age of 18 (c) By a group of young people under the age of 25 5. (a) Outstanding contribution to the Manx community in general (b) Overcoming disability.

Speaker of the House of Keys the Hon Steve Rodan MHK presented the Manx language awards, while President of Tynwald the Hon Noel Cringle MLC gave a vote of thanks.
