Medieval Experience Day at Castle Rushen 10 July 2009  Visitors to Castle Rushen on Sunday 19th July 2009 will be able to experience over 300 years of living history. The impressive limestone fortress will be transported back to Medieval times, giving everyone a chance to find out even more about the people who lived, worked and fought within the castle walls. The castle gates will be open from 10am to 5pm and normal admission charges apply.
Longbow archery demonstrations, displays of Medieval weaponry and Medieval games will be taking place in the castle grounds throughout the day. Children of all ages will have the chance to make their own coat of arms, inspired by those on display throughout the castle. Allison Fox, Curator: Archaeology for Manx National Heritage commented: “Castle Rushen is an awe-inspiring building just as a structure, but we wanted to take this opportunity to bring back to life some of the activities that would have taken place here throughout a particular period in its history. We’re also very pleased to be able to welcome a special guest on the day. Elizabeth of York, visiting from the year 1500, will tell visitors throughout the day the fascinating stories behind some of the Castle’s tapestries and maybe even about the building’s connection with her son, Henry VIII.”  Inside the castle from 1pm to 3pm, there will be traditional music performed by the group Hartes Ease, adding a touch more Medieval atmosphere to the day. Visitors will also be able to find out about Medieval food and dining habits, as well as the medicines, herbs, lotions and potions people once used. Children from 5 to 11 will have the chance to complete the fun children’s discovery trail around the castle, helping them to get even more from their visit.
Refreshments courtesy of the Friends of Manx National Heritage will be available on the day. Manx National Heritage would like to extend its thanks to the Friends of Manx National Heritage volunteers without whom events like these could not take place. Public car parking is available in Castletown and bus numbers 1, 1C, 2, 2A and 8 – from Douglas, Peel, Port Erin and Port St. Mary – all stop there. Castle Rushen is also regularly served by the Isle of Man Steam Railway. So come along to Castle Rushen on Sunday 19th July and experience Manx Medieval times with Manx National Heritage.
