Public Protection Unit statement 2 Nov 2009 2 November 2009 On Wednesday 28th October 2009, James John BAREFIELD, a 31 year old man from Kirk Michael was arrested on behalf of the Metropolitan Police in connection with an allegation of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child. Head of the Public Protection Unit Detective Inspector Phil Shimmin said: The investigation is in its early stages and involves alleged internet offences, which are not covered by the Isle of Mans Sexual Offences Act 1992. Mr BAREFIELD was arrested by the Isle of Man Constabulary under a provision of the UKs Sexual Offences Act 2003, which enables British citizens to be tried in the UK for certain sexual offences committed elsewhere. On Thursday 29th October 2009, Mr BAREFIELD was escorted to London, and appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates Court on the morning of Friday 30th October 2009, charged with two counts of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child. He was released on bail with a number of conditions, including not to return to the Isle of Man. He will next appear at Southwark Crown Court on 27th November 2009. Mr BAREFIELD is a teacher at Queen Elizabeth High School, Peel, and is currently the head of English. The Department of Education has been notified of the arrest and Mr BAREFIELD has been suspended from work pending the outcome of criminal proceedings. The school and Department are assisting with the investigation and will ensure support is offered to students and staff returning from the half term holiday. Additionally, police from the Western Neighbourhood Policing Team will be available to speak to students at the school.
