Head of the Public Protection Unit Detective Inspector Phil Shimmin said:

‘The investigation is in its early stages and involves alleged internet offences, which are not covered by the Isle of Man’s Sexual Offences Act 1992. Mr BAREFIELD was arrested by the Isle of Man Constabulary under a provision of the UK’s Sexual Offences Act 2003, which enables British citizens to be tried in the UK for certain sexual offences committed elsewhere.’

On Thursday 29th October 2009, Mr BAREFIELD was escorted to London, and appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on the morning of Friday 30th October 2009, charged with two counts of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child. He was released on bail with a number of conditions, including not to return to the Isle of Man. He will next appear at Southwark Crown Court on 27th November 2009.
