Vandalism could lead to school grounds ban 28 July 2010

FURTHER incidents of vandalism in school grounds during holidays could lead to a ban on their use.

That’s the warning from Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Education and Children, after vandals struck at Braddan Primary School on Tuesday.

Police are investigating an incident in which playground furniture was thrown around the yard and damaged and a storage shed was broken into. This contained football equipment that was strewn across the playing field. Appealing for help in solving the crime,

Constable Alan Shimmin said: ‘It is permitted for youths to use the school fields. However, it is very disappointing that at the start of the holidays this privilege has been abused.’

Only last Friday, Minister Teare reminded the public that school grounds are open to all during the holidays, but warned people to use them responsibly – click here for full story.

He said today:

‘We will not tolerate vandalism in our school grounds. If the culprits are apprehended we will insist on prosecution. As well as being a nuisance for police and school staff to have to deal with, this ultimately costs the taxpayer money as they have to pay for repairs and replacements.’

The Minister warned:

‘Further incidents will mean we have to reconsider our policy of leaving the facilities available for use out of school hours.’

Anyone who has information about the crime should contact Constable Alan Shimmin on 631593.
