DOI Engineer Receives First Class Degree 17 September 2010

Members of the Department of Infrastructure celebrated the achievement of Stewart McLaren, who has been awarded a first class bachelor of science honours degree in Construction Management.

Stewart, 41, of Douglas, joined the Department in 1994 and is a Project Engineer within the Operations Division. He has led many of the Department’s key projects in recent years including the Vicarage Road development, Braddan Bridge and Johnny Watterson’s Lane.

Currently the Deputy Quarry Manager in the Division’s two quarries at Poortown and Stoney Mountain, Stewart hasn’t finished with studying just yet – he’s now working towards a Diploma in Quarry Technology from Derby University.

Political Member for the Operations Division Graham Cregeen MHK said:

‘Stewart is one of four employees being sponsored by the Operations Division’s Civil Engineering Section to undertake part-time degrees. I am full of admiration for Stewart and the others who are still studying. To complete a degree whilst maintaining a very full-time job is a great achievement, and to be awarded a first class degree is testament to Stewart’s abilities.’

Stewart said:

‘After many years of study, I am delighted to have been awarded my degree. It has been hard work but very rewarding. I would like to thank the Department for giving me, and others, the opportunity to develop professionally. I believe it demonstrates the Operations Division’s commitment to deliver a high value-added engineering service into the future.’
