Minister welcomes new staff to Department 24 September 2010

STAFF newly appointed to the Department of Education and Children were welcomed by the Minister yesterday.

Eddie Teare MHK told new employees they were joining an impressive team whose hard work in delivering education, whatever role they occupied, would determine the future prosperity of the Island.

He spoke of the budgetary constraints the Island was under and said fresh eyes could often determine where efficiencies could be achieved.

His audience at the annual New Staff Reception, held at Cronk-y-Berry Primary School, included 28 new teachers, 16 of them newly qualified and many of them graduates of the Isle of Man College and University of Chester Professional Graduate Certificate in Education course.

It also included College lecturers, civil servants, education support staff, youth workers, caretakers, cleaners and school meals staff.

The Minister said:

‘In a large organisation such as the DEC, there are always staff who leave to take up appointments elsewhere to further their careers and hence there will always be a need to recruit.
‘However, as each post falls vacant we undertake a full review to see whether the position is still relevant, or whether the duties can be split between other employees. Only after this will we decide to recruit. Those joining us bring a new perspective which, I am sure, will benefit education on the Island.’
