The Department of Infrastructure to Improve Court Facilities in Douglas 19 January 2011

The Department of Infrastructure has received Tynwald approval for a project to carry out alterations at the General Registries Building in Douglas in order to create improved Court facilities, with independent access for the Judiciary, waiting areas and advocates meetings space within the existing buildings.

The project which also comprises the re-modeling and fit-out of part of the Ground Floor at Murray House on Mount Havelock to relocate certain Legal Aid and Tribunals staff from the Registries Building is aimed to improve Court facilities and enable the existing space to accommodate an increasing demand for Court and Tribunal space

Member with responsibility for Properties, Tim Crookall MHK said:

“the Chief Registrar highlighted a requirement for further Court space to be made available for the expanding requirements of the Courts service. This project will help satisfy the need, by providing the ability to concurrently operate two independent Courts in the Registries Building. The Department has worked with the Chief Registrar to develop the scheme adopting the principle of maximizing the use of existing facilities rather than considering any new build in this particular instance. The scheme which will be delivered by the private sector, is further evidence of the Department’s support to the Island’s construction industry.”

The project which is anticipated to start in early February, will cost £346,000 and is programmed to be complete by the end of May.
