Arts Council support for The Institute in Laxey 20 May 2011

The Working Men’s Institute in Laxey will be officially re-opened today (Friday 20 May 2011) after a comprehensive refurbishment.

The honour of unveiling a plaque marking the official opening will go to Bob Kinrade, whose family involvement with the building goes back over four generations.

The Isle of Man Arts Council supported the building’s refurbishment with a grant of £35,000 for the purchase of lighting equipment, sound equipment, a video projector and a piano. Richard Henthorn, Chairman of The Institute refurbishment committee, said:

‘This 130 year old building was recovered from a virtually derelict state by a group of local volunteers. Over a period of four years the group raised more than £160,000 to refurbish the building and half as much again in free labour and materials. The grant from the Arts Council means we can purchase essential equipment to ensure our vision of the Institute becoming a multi-use events base can be realised, rather than it being simply a traditional village hall. We look forward to using the space for plays, music and entertainment of all kinds to encourage people to come out of their homes and enjoy themselves in Laxey’s newest venue.’

Representing the Arts Council at the official opening is Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure. He commented:

‘Arts Council funding is used in many different ways to support community projects as well as productions, and The Institute in Laxey is a worthy recipient. The Arts Council grant ensures the building has the necessary equipment that will enable many different arts and community groups to benefit. I am sure it will become the heart of the community’s leisure and entertainment for many years and I’d like to congratulate all involved with the refurbishment.’

Quintin Gill MHK, Chairman of the Arts Council, said:

‘The Institute is a beacon for what can be achieved by the community pulling together. The public support and craftsmanship that has been channelled into this building has brought it back to life and I am sure it will become the premier arts venue in the east of the Island.’
