Waste Strategy Consultation Launch 25 May 2011

The Department of Infrastructure is seeking the public’s views on how waste should be managed in the future and what measures they think should be considered.

Political member with responsibility for waste, Mr Graham Cregeen MHK said:

‘The Island produces approximately 200,000 tonnes of waste per annum, which is nearly 2.5 tonnes for every resident. Over the past 10 years the Island has moved away from landfilling its waste and now almost half is recycled, of the remainder just over a quarter is sent to the Energy from Waste plant where electricity is recovered, with the rest being landfilled.’

In order to identify the key waste issues facing the Isle of Man, the Department of Infrastructure has set up a working group with members from the main waste producing sectors and environmental groups to produce a consultation paper and Department member Mr Cregeen is urging as many people as possible to fill it in.

Mr Cregeen added:

‘This consultation paper is a result of a lot of hard work and I would like to thank representatives from the IOM Municipal Association, the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, IOM Employers’ Federation, Zero Waste Mann and Friends of the Earth (IOM) for working in partnership with the Department in the development of this consultation document. Our aim over the next 20 years must be to continue to treat waste as a resource and ultimately aim to send zero waste to landfill, and this consultation is the first part of this process.’

Members of the public will be able to complete the consultation paper on line by visiting www.waste.gov.im . Additionally, a telephone line has been set up where members of the public can leave a message and will be called back by the waste team with further information or to talk through the questionnaire - the telephone number is 686494.

The launch is taking place at the Energy from waste plant at 2pm on Wednesday 25th May 2011.
