10,000 people ‘like’ the Isle of Man as the Department of Economic Development's social media presence grows 6 July 2011

The Department of Economic Development is pleased to announce that Visit Isle of Man's Facebook page has recently surpassed the 10,000 fan mark and it is not even one year old yet!

Various content is shared on the Visit Isle of Man Facebook page at least once a day including photos, videos, news stories, upcoming events, relevant Isle of Man links and the ever popular 'Guess Where' quizzes – which invite fans to identify a location on the Island.

In terms of demographics, the 18-24 age group is the most populous, representing nearly a quarter of all fans, closely followed by the 25-34 year olds. The majority reside outside of the Isle of Man: 43% living in the UK, 13% from USA and 3% from Ireland.

Minister for the Department of Economic Development, Allan Bell MHK, said:

"While we are delighted with its popularity in terms of the number of fans, we are more pleased about the level of interaction and positivity generated on a daily basis.
Since its launch in August last year, on average, wall posts are viewed over 9,600 times daily, receiving 30 likes or comments every day. Launched at the same time, the Visit Isle of Man Twitter profile is also proving popular, having attracted over 1,500 followers to date."

Tourism's social media activity has also been successful in attracting a number of journalist visits to the Isle of Man, including Zoe Dawes, super blogger for Visit Britain and video producer Andrew White from Walks Around Britain.

The Department of Economic Development regards social media as an increasingly important part of its marketing activities, as it allows it to engage directly with potential visitors, businesses and investors to answer their questions, encourage discussion and share with them what the Island is all about. Economic Development's LinkedIn group and Twitter profile, established in late 2009 to engage directly with those people with an interest in the economic development of the Isle of Man, have also seen encouraging popularity with over 400 members and followers respectively.
