Projects completed at NSC 4 August 2011

Three development schemes have been completed at the National Sports Centre, Douglas.

Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure, said:

‘We want to apologise to customers for the disruption they may have experienced over the past few weeks but I am certain they will appreciate the improvements to our facilities.’

The pool toilets are back in use following a total refurbishment. The previous facilities had served for 13 years since the complex opened. All fittings and fixtures have been replaced including sinks, mirrors, lighting and hand dryers. Additionally, a new low level toilet for children has been provided in the ladies’ toilets.

A major building project involving an outside contractor laying a large drainage pipe under Groves Road and the NSC car park necessitated Groves Road being closed for three weeks. It has now re-opened. Landscaping following the project will result in the NSC gaining 12 additional parking spaces. The grassed area that used to split the two car parks is being removed and replaced with new spaces by the contractor at no cost to the DCCL.

The third, minor scheme resulted from the NSC working in partnership with the Department’s Public Transport Division to develop a new school bus bay in the NSC car park. It means from next term that school children arriving for sports and swimming lessons will step off the bus on to a dedicated walkway. The new designated area for school drop offs makes it easier for buses to manoeuvre in and out of the car park and will result in less congestion.

The NSC is open daily for swimming and a wide range of summer indoor and outdoor sporting activities. For more details contact the NSC reception on 688555 or visit their website.
