DEFA Takes Delivery of Green Vehicle 11 August 2011

DEFAs first electric vehicleThe Forestry Directorate has recently been handed the keys to its first electric vehicle. This is a 'Polaris Ranger EV' supplied by Motors and Mowers of Kirk Michael. The vehicle, which has a maximum range of 50 miles and a top speed of 25 mph, is to be used at the Tynwald National Park and on the Directorate’s hill land and forest estate.

The Directorate’s hill land is of international environmental importance and the use of this new electric vehicle adds to the Directorate’s commitment to the protection of these areas. The vehicle has minimal impact on the hill land in terms of both its physical impact, as well as its carbon footprint, and offers a cost-saving on traditional vehicle fuels.

Its use in the Arboretum will also be a first and the lack of engine noise will mean that this peaceful and popular amenity is less disturbed.

Tim Crookall commented: "This is the first off-road electric vehicle within Government and it is right that this Department should lead the way in using and developing the use of this type of technology. It will help with the management of the estate as a whole without disturbing either the wildlife or users of the estate, and will cause minimal pollution."
