Government Builds on Property Savings 19 September 2011

GOVERNMENT is stepping up an initiative to cut its accommodation costs and sell off surplus land and buildings which has already achieved savings of more than £500,000 a year and the disposal of property worth £1.85m.

As part of the Transforming Government project to improve efficiency across departments, a dedicated team of existing staff has been pulled together in the Department of Infrastructure to focus on delivering cost savings in Government’s use and ownership of property.

The Strategic Asset Management Unit has a target of achieving savings of £1.5 million in the annual costs of providing office accommodation. Since 2009 the savings from making better use of office space and moving staff from rented into Government-owned accommodation have totalled more than £560,000 a year.

For example, the Department of Economic Development and the Department of Education and Children achieved reductions in office space of over 40% between them following the restructure of Government Departments. The Department of Social Care has also vacated significant amounts of rented space.

Tim Crookall, Political Member for the Properties Division in the Department of Infrastructure, commented:

‘At this time of financial challenge for the Island’s Government it is essential that all Departments work together to make efficiency savings so that priority services to the public can be maintained. I am pleased that the Department of Infrastructure is playing a full part in this process and I am confident that our Strategic Asset Management Unit will be able to build upon the results already achieved.’
