Photo Competition Winners Selected 28 August 2003

Judging has been completed in the Department of Tourism and Leisure Photo Competition 2003.

Some 43 photographers submitted more than 300 entries by the deadline in July. After lengthy deliberation the judges, headed by Tourism Minister David Cretney, have selected the winners, all of whom have been invited to a prize presentation on September 9.

Mr Cretney explained: 'The standard of entries was extremely high and made judging very difficult. The most popular categories which received the most entries were S cenic, Heritage and Coastal, and some of the winners' images are being used in the main Isle of Man Guide 2004, which is currently in production. 'None of the winners knows yet which prize or prizes they have won but I am pleased that almost all have confirmed they will be able to attend the prize presentation next month.'

Ten of the winners are Island residents while three are based in the UK. The 13 finalists have won 17 prizes - with winners and runners-up to be named in all seven categories. Prizes will also be awarded to two additional runners-up, plus the overall winner who will receive the grand prize of 1,000.

Eleven winners and runners-up have confirmed they are able to attend the prize presentation while one will be represented by a partner.

The breakdown of entries was as follows: Entrants - 17 women, 26 men; 30 from IoM, 13 from UK.
