Gorse Fire in South 20 October 2003

A serious gorse fire took place over a large area of open country side in the area of Bradda and Fleshick in the south of the Island. The fire started on Friday 17th October and was successfully brought under control during the evening of Sunday 19th October.

Despite the extremely difficult circumstances of working in isolated areas the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service through the resourcefulness and expertise of its officers finally brought the fire under control on Sunday evening. Only the considerable efforts of the Fire and Rescue Service avoided serious damage to residents homes, injury to members of the public and officers and possibly even loss of life.

In dealing with this emergency situation, the actions of the Fire & Rescue Service, Police, Civil Defence Volunteers and staff from the Department of Transport and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries once again highlights the effective working relationships present when incidents of this nature occur on the Island.

The Department wishes to pass on its appreciation to, and publicly thank, everyone involved and in particular those Agencies mentioned above for attending the incident so quickly and providing a full emergency response to what could have developed into an even more serious incident. This included not only fighting the fire, but the provision of equipment from the Farming Community and Government Agencies and supplying refreshments to the Emergency Services.
