Jurby Village Improvements 8 November 2003 The November sitting of Tynwald will be asked to lay the foundations for the
future development of Jurby as a sustainable village community.
Local Government and Environment Minister Pamela
Crowe MLC will move the spending of £841,000 to upgrade the electricity, water
and drainage infrastructure in the area.
Mrs Crowe will also move receipt of a report setting out the way forward for the
longer-term development of Jurby Village, including new housing, new industrial
units and, subject to planning, the new prison.
The report follows a comprehensive study, authorised by the Council of
Ministers, of the future of the Government-owned land at Jurby. A study group
headed by the Department’s Estates and Housing Director, Richard Senior,
consulted widely across Government Departments and
with community representatives. The exercise also included a questionnaire
asking tenants of the Bretney Estate for their views on their area.
The report covers a range of issues including leisure and sports activities, and
community facilities.
It states:
"Feedback from the Jurby community quite clearly indicated a desire to see
Jurby grow by increasing and improving housing, social and recreational
facilities and opportunities for local work. In effect the proposals for new
development and improvements to Jurby would turn it into a proper village with a
centre and co-ordinated facilities. This vision for Jurby would lead to the
creation of a sustainable village by building on the strengths of the community
and releasing the potential of the airfield, the industrial estate and the
former Jurby army camp site – all of which are underused assets currently owned
by Government."
A long-term Government commitment is required,
adds the report, for this vision to become reality. The report also notes that
items requiring Tynwald approval will be brought forward at the appropriate time
as part of Government’s business planning, budget
and administrative processes. More stories >>>
