Spot the Dog 15 August 2003

'Spot the Dog' will be visiting Ottakar's Bookshop, Strand Street, Douglas on Saturday 16th August 2003, at 11.00am, to read stories to children, and distribute accident prevention bookmarks.

Following on from the recent child accident prevention week theme - "One moment can change everything", bookshops and libraries in the Isle of Man have been invited by Health Promotion to stock special bookmarks this summer which highlight child accident prevention awareness.

Summer holidays can be peak times for childhood accidents. A gentle reminder when you are reading books with children can help to get the safety message across. 2500 accident prevention bookmarks will be distributed over the summer holiday period.

Each colourful bookmark contains hints on keeping children safe, appropriate to the age of the child, and contact information for the Child Accident Prevention Trust which supplies books, fact sheets and web pages on accident awareness. Angela Howland, Health Promotion Coordinator (Children and Families) said 'This scheme will be evaluated, and if it proves successful, we hope to work with bookshops and libraries to extend the health promotion bookmark scheme to other topic areas in the future'.

One of the participating bookshops - Ottakar's, in Strand Street - said 'Everybody uses bookmarks, and when you combine that with useful information, it can only be a good thing'. Lesley Dorward, Director of Health Promotion adds 'We would like to thank the participating bookshops and libraries for their enthusiastic response, enabling us to work in partnership to encourage child accident prevention this summer'.
