Christmas Evening at House of Manannan 21 November 2003

The Friends of Manx National Heritage are continuing their year of special events by hosting a special evening at the House of Manannan on Friday the 28th November with music, refreshments and the chance to do a spot of early Christmas shopping.

The House of Manannan heritage shop will remain open especially for the event and as an incentive for Friends of Manx National Heritage a gift voucher of £2.00 will be given for every purchase made over £20.00. The heritage shop has many gifts which are made exclusively for Manx National Heritage so if you are looking for something different then this is an ideal opportunity.

However, this is not just a shopping event as there will be music to entertain as well. This will be provided by Cliogaree Twoaie who have been singing together for nearly 20 years, mostly in Manx Gaelic. They have an extensive repertoire of Christmas music from medieval to modern times, including Manx carvals. These were 18th and 19th century religious songs sung during the Christmas period, particularly on Christmas Eve, the original Oie'l Verree. They sing unaccompanied, as was the Manx tradition.

To get you into the festive spirit and help you relax mulled wine and mince pies will be provided by the Friends and these will be free to members.

Whilst this is an event hosted by the Friends of Manx National Heritage members of the general public are also very welcome to attend, and a small charge will be made for the mulled wine and mince pies.

There will also be a raffle with a chance to win a framed print of your choice. The prints are reproductions of a small selection of some of the most important Manx artists in the collections of Manx National Heritage and proceeds will go to the Friends organisation who provide invaluable help with the purchase of particular artefacts for the nation.

The organisation is growing and now numbers over 5000 members. The profile of the organisation is also increasing greatly with lots of events organised for members throughout the year and more involvement in the special events held at the various Manx National Heritage. Membership of the Friends organisation is beneficial, not only to Manx National Heritage to whom it offers monetary and human resources, but the individual members who gain free admission to the 550 properties throughout Britain operated by English Heritage, the National Trust, Scottish National Trust and Historic Scotland plus, of course, free admission to all of Manx National Heritage's museums and 5% discount in the heritage shops. Details for joining Friends of Manx National Heritage can be found at all the Manx National Heritage sites.

So, for those who are tired of having to travel into Douglas all the time for extra gift shopping come along to the House of Manannan on Friday the 28th November between 5.30 and 8.00 p.m. and enjoy an evening of Manx music and a warming glass of mulled wine and a mince pie, and meet the 'Friends'.
