Dive In! 21 November 2003

An exciting new temporary exhibition opens at the House of Manannan in Peel on Saturday 29th November 2003. "Dive In! The Underwater Archaeology of the Isle of Man" is being staged by Manx National Heritage to help raise awareness of underwater heritage, to celebrate the forthcoming publication of a new book on the shipwrecks around the Isle of Man and the 50th anniversary of the British Sub-Aqua Club.

Curator of Archaeology for Manx National Heritage, Allison Fox said;

"The Isle of Man has a wealth of important archaeological sites and monuments on land. What isn't as well known is that we also have an incredibly rich and important resource of maritime heritage. There are over 1000 known wreck sites under the waters around the Island."

The aim of the exhibition is to highlight this aspect of our heritage and share some of the stories and artefacts from under the sea. To most people, the underwater heritage is not as readily accessible as land-based archaeology. This is an opportunity for Manx National Heritage to help raise awareness of what lies beneath the sea and we are very grateful to all the individuals and organisations who have assisted with this project."

Amongst the artefacts on show will be a selection found on the wreck of the HMS Racehorse which sank in 1822. The Racehorse has the highest level of protection and is owned by the Isle of Man Sub Aqua Club. There will also be items from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ship Peveril which sank in 1899. These have been loaned especially for the exhibition and have never before been on public display.

Advice on where to get more information on wrecks, underwater archaeology and the sport of diving will be available. The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday 29th November 2003 until Sunday 25th April 2004. Admission to this part of the House of Manannan is free.
