Organic Farming Scheme Moratorium 26 January 2004

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Hon John Rimington MHK, has announced a moratorium on applications under the Organic Farming Scheme 2003 with immediate effect.

The Scheme was not envisaged in terms of hill land, which is, in practice, already organic. However, the Scheme does not specifically exclude such land. The Department considers that this is anomalous.

The Department remains firmly committed to the principle of assisting with conversion to organic farming methods.

The Scheme will be amended as soon as possible so that it can be made available again to assist further conversion to organic farming.

However, no new applications are being accepted until further notice.
