The Island Race 12 March 2004

This year to celebrate a hundred years of the Isle of Man TT Races, Murray Walker presents 'The Island Race' as part of 'The Archive Hour' series this Saturday the 20th of March on BBC Radio 4 at 8pm.

Murray who attended his first TT in 1925 at the age of 2 when he watched his father race, affectionately charts the rise of the TT from its inception in 1904 as a race for cars to the present day where it is remains a major part of the motor racing calendar.

With the help of a vast archive and original interviews plus his own unique memories Murray also recalls the great names who have ridden the mountain circuit, such as Stanley Woods, Geoff Duke, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood, Giacoma Agostini and Joey Dunlop.

He also examines what this annual festival of speed means to the Manx people and how the Island copes with its annual two week transformation from its serene, tranquil self into a magnet for bikers from around the world.

With over 60 years of TT experience to draw on 'The Island Race' is very much Walkers personal history.
