Island in Bloom 22 March 2004

With spring in the air, the Department of Tourism and Leisure have launched the Island in Bloom competition 2004.

All local authorities have been invited to participate in the competition to improve the appearance of towns and villages. All those who enter are eligible to receive a £50 grant towards administration costs.

Last years overall winner of the competition, Ramsey, will represent the Isle of Man in the coastal resort category against UK finalists in the Britain in Bloom competition this summer. We wish them good luck.

Again this year we will particularly be focusing on litter and the Department of Local Government and the Environment will be sponsoring the 'DOLGE Clean Community Award'. The trophy will be presented to the winner at the presentation award ceremony during October. Last year, Castletown won the award and should be congratulated for their worth while effort and achievement.

Tourism Minister David Cretney is urging people to support the Island In Bloom competition.

Mr Cretney said:

"This is a beautiful time of year with the first spring flowers appearing in abundance. I would urge both local authorities and members of the public to support the Island in Bloom competition as enthusiastically as in previous years because it results in areas being spruced up for everyone's benefit."

The Britain in Bloom campaign will be continuing its partnership with B&Q this year. The Department of Tourism & Leisure is pleased to be working with our own B&Q store here on the Island and they will be sponsoring prizes for the 2004 competition.

Any local authority which has not yet received details of the competition can contact Island in Bloom Co-ordinator Anna Hemy for information - telephone 686733.
