Port St Mary Report 5 July 2004

The Department of Local Government and the Environment has received the report of the independent inquiry conducted by Mr. J. F. Kissack, OBE, BComm, FCMI, into the exercise by Port St. Mary Village Commissioners of their statutory functions between the 1st April, 1998, and the 31st March, 2004. Mr. Kissack took evidence in public between the 11th and 13th May and on the 3rd June, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hall, Port St. Mary.

As the Department has only just received the report, it has not yet had time to give proper consideration to it or to the recommendations which have been made. However, the Department will be considering the report in the coming weeks and deciding how to take forward the conclusions reached by the Inquiry Chairman and the recommendations he has made.

Speaking about the 47-page report, Minister for Local Government and the Environment, the Hon. John Rimington, MHK, said:

"I am pleased that Mr. Kissack has carried out the task set him in such an efficient manner and that he has been able to report so quickly after taking oral and written evidence. I should like to place on record my thanks to Mr. Kissack for his work in this regard. Though the Department has not yet had time to study the report in detail, I have decided that it should be made public as soon as possible as the issues covered in it are a matter of public interest, not only for the residents of Port St. Mary but also for other Local Authorities and ratepayers in other parts of the Island."
