Summerhill Glen Illuminations 6 July 2004

An investigation into the future of Summerhill Glen will result in the illuminations being switched on by the end of this month.

Councillors have agreed to spend £20,000 to re-commission the local attraction.

Council Leader Lynda Ramsay said:

"It had been suggested that the glen should be treated as a natural woodland area, largely because the budget of the committees under whose remit the glen fell could not meet the very high cost of a major refurbishment scheme. However, a report from the borough engineer and surveyor revealed that the illuminations could be switched on for a cost of 20,000 and we're very pleased to have reached agreement to do this."

A study is already under way on the drainage infrastructure in the glen and, alongside this, Douglas Corporation officers will prepare a detailed improvement scheme for consideration by members.

Councillor Ramsay said:

"It has also been agreed that leisure services should take over responsibility for the glen that the committee had previously shared with the public works committee. We are now pressing to secure future funding and have identified a way forward that should ensure the glen is maintained for the benefit of rate payers and visitors."
