Joint Barrule and Panther Operation 19 July 2004

The Fisheries Patrol Vessel 'Barrule' and the Customs and Excise Vessel 'Panther' are set to circle the Island this week (beginning Monday 19th July) in a joint exercise to increase understanding between Departments.

After an exchange of officers, both vessels will check lobster and crab pots around the Island. They will remove those not marked in accordance with Bye-laws.

Future exchanges of officers will be made during routine patrols of the Territorial Sea, increasing the effectiveness of both vessels.

The exercise stems from an initiative by Peter Karran, MHK who is the Member of the Department with particular responsibility for fisheries.

This exercise demonstrates the increasing co-operation between Departments with an interest in marine issues.

The ability of the Customs and Fisheries patrol vessels to assist each other in their respective enforcement roles will add to the benefits that both vessels can bring to the Island.
