New Premises for Onchan Doctors 19 August 2004

The Department of Health and Social Security is pleased to announce the opening of the new premises for Doctors Young, Stone, McAlister and Farrant on Monday 23rd August. The new premises which are situated in the Village Walk, Onchan, are to be known as Village Walk Health Centre and have been created in the former 'Dealzone' premises underneath Shoprite in Onchan Shopping Precinct.

Mr S Rodan MHK, Minister, in welcoming the opening of the new premises said:

"The opening of these new premises follows on from the recent opening of the new Kensington Health Centre and once again demonstrates the commitment of the Department to ensure high standards of health care and continuous improvement in the provision of services."

The GPs have outgrown their current premises in Avondale Court, Onchan and the new accommodation will enable both GPs and Community Health Staff (District Nurses and Health Visitors) to provide services to the increasing number of patients in the Onchan area.

The building contains spacious accommodation for each Doctor and Practice Nurse, together with facilities for the Child Health Clinic, District Nursing Service, additional record storage and office space.

Patients will be able to enjoy a comfortable waiting area with ample room for children in prams or buggies. The etched glass panel portraying Manx scenes, previously located in the A&E entrance at the former hospital, has been incorporated in the waiting area. The surgery is directly next to a car park which provides for disabled drivers.

Mr Roden added:

"The new Health Centre represents a significant investment on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Security in conjunction with the partners of the Practice. The refurbishment of these premises has been carried out to a high standard by the Estates Directorate of the Department at a cost in the region of £200,000."

The Minister, thanking all those involved in the project for their hard work and commitment during the various stages of the development, stated:

"I am delighted that the Department has been able to provide another Group Practice with much improved facilities to enable them to continue to provide a high standard of medical service to their patients."

Dr McAlister, speaking on behalf of the Practice, commented:

"The partners and staff of the new Village Walk Health Centre are pleased to welcome their patients to this new facility which takes primary care in Onchan into the 21st century. Great changes are occurring in primary care and it is thanks to the insight of the past and present Health Ministers, Mrs Christian and Mr Rodan, and management within the Health Services Division of DHSS that the Isle of Man will be at the forefront of these changes. Changes in working practice cannot occur without the infrastructure to support it and we wish to thank all at Estates Division for the fine building they have provided ourpatients with."

The Minister will be officially opening Village Walk Health Centre in October.
