Westmoreland Court 25 August 2004

The Minister for Local Government and the Environment, Hon. John Rimington, MHK, today (25th August) handed over the keys of a new apartment at Westmoreland Court to Miss Sharon Callow.

Westmoreland Court has been developed on a 'brownfield site' formerly occupied by motor trade premises and is part of the Tynwald Street/Allan Street Regeneration project. The recently completed development of 18 two-bedroomed apartments were quickly snapped up by purchasers from the First-Time Buyers Register. The next phase of the project is about to start on an adjacent site on Tynwald Street and will provide 22 retirement flats for rental by Douglas Corporation.

Mr Rimington said:

"I am committed to continuing the Department's efforts to provide affordable homes for the Island's residents.

"Since the launch of the First-Time Buyers Scheme, 193 properties have been completed and a further 123 are on site or about to commence on site. There is a very high demand from First-Time Buyers for homes in Douglas, Onchan and Braddan with almost 600 prospective buyers on the Department's Register indicating these areas as their first preference.

"To try and satisfy this demand, the Department has a further 28 apartments under construction on the former Church Site in Pulrose and another 40 homes under construction at Linden Gardens. Both of these schemes are scheduled for completion next year."

The apartments designed by the Department were constructed by McArd Contractors Ltd and are covered by a NHBC Buildmark warranty. DD Management, who have worked with the Department to set up the management company for the development, presented Miss Callow with a bottle of champagne to celebrate the occasion and the Department also presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Sharon said:

"I am delighted. It's great to have a place of my own at last. I've been on the First-Time Buyers' Register for four and a half years and now it's finally happened!"
