New Fishing Cats 26 August 2004

Two female fishing cats arrived at the Wildlife Park on Monday 23rd August from Drayton Manor Theme Park in Staffordshire, UK.

The fishing cats were bred at Drayton Manor Park and have been donated to the Curraghs Wildlife Park as part of the British and European breeding programme for this species.

Fishing cats are interesting members of the cat family and are not that closely related to domestic tabbies. They have a flatter head and shorter tail than domestic cats. All the feet are webbed although this is more developed on the front paws and the claws are only partially retractable. Their name is well chosen since they are renowned for wading into streams and ditches in search of prey which includes fish and aquatic invertebrates such as crayfish.

The cats are becoming accustomed to their new enclosure while the Park's male is held in an adjacent enclosure to be introduced to them once they have settled in.
