Wishing Seat for Newlands 4 October 2004

Artist Gavin Carter has created a wonderful 'Wishing Seat' for the garden of Ward 20 at Noble's Hospital.

Gavin donated a large log of oak to the hospital and then gave his time voluntarily to carve the seat for patients to enjoy in the garden area of Ward 20 - Newlands Rehabilitation Unit. Patients and staff watched while Gavin carved, and then got involved by each hammering a coin into the seat to make a wish. The idea for the 'Wishing Seat' was inspired by an Irish tradition of placing coins in a tree for luck.

The project was initiated through the Noble Arts Programme, and Gavin worked with Activities Nurse Elaine Hayes at Ward 20 to design a project for the garden that could be enjoyed by everyone at the unit and also be added to over time.

Gavin said:

"Patients can come outside and make a wish by hammering a coin into the seat."

Elaine Hayes was delighted with the finished seat, saying:

"It's a lovely idea and it will give a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people, and is a great talking point for the garden."
