Wildlife Park 40th Anniversary 11 October 2004

The popular visitor attraction will celebrate its 40th anniversary during 2005. As part of a number of events and activities being planned, the Wildlife Park is hoping to organise a photo exhibition depicting the changes that have taken place at the Wildlife Park over the forty years.

There have been many changes at the Wildlife Park since its official opening on July 3rd 1965 by the then Governor, Sir Ronald Garvie. At that time photos appeared of him handling a pair of lion cubs specially brought in for the event and many locals still recall the baby elephant housed for a year, until it grew too large, in the Ark. Neither would happen nowadays when the Wildlife Park chooses which animals to exhibit based on more scientific than popular criteria since it participates in many endangered species breeding programmes.

Other, more subtle, changes have taken place as the Wildlife Park has become a more wooded area, in contrast to the rather bleak, open site it appears in many early photographs.

General Manager of the Wildlife Park, Mr Nick Pinder, explained:

"We do have some early photos ourselves but we'd love to be able to put together a historical exhibition showing the changes undergone by the Park so if anyone has any photos of the Park they are happy to lend us, particularly if they are dated accurately, we would be very grateful. We probably won't use the originals but will take copies of them so we shouldn't require the photos for very long and, of course, we'll undertake to return them all to their rightful owners."

Anyone willing to loan their photos of the Wildlife Park is asked to get in touch direct with Nick Pinder, General Manager on 693572.

The Wildlife Park is open from 10 am until 6 pm every day until the end of October. Thereafter it will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
