Red Pandas On Show 18 October 2004

The two young red pandas born earlier this year are now coming out to explore their enclosure, usually under the watchful eye of their mother.

In the wild, young red pandas are vulnerable to predators, such as leopards, so the mother moves them to new nests frequently and keeps them there until they are nearly full grown and more easily able to escape danger by climbing trees.

The red panda twins were born at the Curraghs Wildlife Park on July 8th and, at three months old, are now agile and strong enough to climb trees and to begin exploring their enclosure.

Duty Manager, Tina Hampton, commented:

"At first they were only coming out briefly at the end of the day but in the last day or two they have been getting more adventurous and coming out earlier on. Mum also seems more relaxed with these two than with last year's cub, which she tried several times to drag back in to the nest box, even though he was nearly as large as her! With half-term coming up, we hope as many people as possible have a chance to see the youngsters."

The Wildlife Park is open every day, from 10 am until 6pm until the end of October (thereafter 10 'til 4 at weekends) and, during halfterm week (October 25th to 29th) will be admitting all visitors at half the normal price.
