Success for Advanced Motorists 28 October 2004

The new local group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) recently commenced its first training programme for associate members to gain the skills and knowledge required to pass the Advanced Driving Test and become full members of the IAM, and the group has just awarded its first Test 'pass'.

As part of the first training programme, a 'classroom' session was successfully held at the Civil Defence Headquarters, Woodbourne Road, Douglas on Tuesday 12th October, followed by the first 'outing' for prospective new members with their assigned 'observers' (trainers) on Sunday 17th October. This initial run started at 10.30am from the Manx Telecom car park at the Isle of Man Business Park.

The Minister for the Department of Transport, John Shimmin, MHK, is actively supporting this initiative which is one of the most important recommendations contained in his Department's recent consultative document on Road Safety. Mr Shimmin attended the 'classroom' theory session and was present at the start of the first 'practical' outing on Sunday morning. While the group of aspiring members were receiving their first 'guidance' runs with their assigned 'observers', Mr Shimmin was taken for a 'demonstration' drive by the new group's Chief Observer, Nick Hunt. Nick was able to demonstrate the training methods used by the IAM, whose standards for membership are based on driving techniques developed by the Police Driver Training Schools.

The Isle of Man Group has also announced its first successful pass of the IAM Advanced Test since the new group was formed on the Island. John Allcote passed his motorcycle test at the end of last week.

The IAM has membership classes for car drivers, motorcyclists and commercial vehicle drivers. Anyone with an interest in joining the Isle of Man Advanced Drivers will be made welcome and information about the IAM can be obtained from www.iam.org.uk.
