Queen's Commonwealth Games Batton 14 March 2005

As part of the build up for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne Australia, 2006 the Queen's Baton will be visiting all the Commonwealth Countries (71 in total) over the course of the next year.

This route will include the Isle of Man from Monday 21st - Thursday 24th March and during that time it will visit ALL the Islands Primary Schools. There will be a Reception at Government House on Monday evening when nominated staff and pupils from the Secondary Schools will attend, giving them an opportunity to see this extremely high-tech Baton which has its own camera and recording device set into it.

On Tuesday morning at 8.45 am the Minister for Education will carry the Baton upto Tynwald Hill where it will be received by the President of Tynwald and the Lord Bishop. From there the Minister (also MHK for Glenfaba) will run the Baton down to St John's School where it will begin its journey around all of the Primary schools on the Island.

A full and very detailed schedule has been arranged by the Commonwealth Games Association and the police in order to accommodate all the schools and this will enable every one to receive it for approximately 20 minutes - plenty of time for photo calls and some associated activities.

The Baton will also be available for general viewing at the following venues along the way:

  • Tuesday 22nd March
    • St George's Court - 2.45 pm
    • Villa Marina - from 3.30 - 4.30 approx
  • Wednesday 23rd March
    • House of Manannin 3.30 - 4.30 approx
  • Thursday 24th March

There will be a full support team traveling with the Baton including security, photographers and representatives of the Commonwealth Games from Australia.

The Baton will arrive from Manchester on Monday evening and departs for Belfast on Thursday evening as it continues it's journey around the Commonwealth.
