New Horizons at Manx Museum 9 May 2005

Manx National Heritage is delighted to announce the opening of a new exhibition of work by nineteen contemporary artists from the west coast of Norway in the National Art Gallery at the Manx Museum on Saturday 14th May 2005.

The exhibition entitled 'New Horizons' will be formally opened by The Hon. Donald Gelling Esq CBE, and Mayor Bergsaker from Stavanger, Norway on the evening of Friday 13th May 2005, when Manx National Heritage Trustees will be hosting a reception for over 100 visiting Norwegian delegates, who will be on the Island to celebrate 100 years of Norwegian independence.

'New Horizons' is one of many projects born out of the signing of a cultural agreement between Rogaland County Council and Manx National Heritage in 2002, which was attended by Their Majesties King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway.

Since the signing of the agreement, Manx National Heritage has been working closely with its counterparts in Norway, and the exhibition is a direct result of work between Manx National Heritage and Martin Worts, Director of the Rogaland Art Centre in Stavanger, Norway.

Kirsty Neate, Curatorial Services Officer for Manx National Heritage, said:

"New Horizons is a contemporary incarnation of the historic links between the Isle of Man and Norway, which stretch back more than 1,000 years to the arrival of the Vikings, who have left their traces throughout the Island in political, social and cultural life. The exhibition pulls together some of the most talented artists from five Norwegian coastal counties and includes work across various mediums of installation art, painting, photography and film."

New Horizons opens at the Manx Museum in Douglas on Saturday 14th May 2005 at 10.00am until Saturday 3rd September 2005. The exhibition is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and admission is free of charge.
