Launch of Manx Wildlife Week 13 June 2005

Bill Henderson, MHK, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry today launched Manx Wildlife Week at the Curraghs Wildlife Park.

Talking about the event, the Minister said:

"I'm very pleased to open the Manx Wildlife Week. It is a chance for the people of the Island to celebrate our wonderful natural Heritage. It is special in that we all appreciate the beauty of our natural heritage, but with the help of this week and all the conservation groups involved we will be able to appreciate the Islandís natural heritage even more. What we think of as having lots of, such as our heather moors, and take for granted, in fact we have not got much left, but it is of European significance. This week will help us to really look at what is special and appreciate in greater depth the uniqueness and special status our wild life has here on Ellan Vannin.

From our Basking Sharks, to our heather moors and orchid meadows to our Hen Harriers and top five Elm Tree population in the world. Also importantly, this is a great opportunity for many of the Islands Conservation groups to work together with Government Departments.

Thanks must go out to the organisers - the Wildlife Park and the Manx Wildlife Trust. I would urge everyone to take part in the events for the week - it will be well worth it."

Wildflowers of Mann, the Manx Bat Group, Manx National Heritage, the Willow Weavers, The Wildlife and Conservation Division of DAFF and the Friends of the Curraghs Wildlife Park all had displays and stalls which are open for visitors to the Wildlife Park all week until Sunday 19th June.

Manx Wildlife Week culminates in a Wildlife Fair on Friday 17th June and Saturday 18th June and features daily orchid walks at Close Sartfield nature reserve with evening wildlife walks at a number of venues around the Island. The Wildlife Park is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm and until 9 pm on Wednesday nights for the all-inclusive barbecue.
