Differences between TT and MGP 3 July 2003

The difference between the format of the Manx Grand Prix and that of the TT will be further marked at this year's event. At the TT, 250cc bikes ran only within the Junior 600cc race rather than in their own right as previously. At the Manx the 250s still have their own event. The TT had separate races for 125s and 400s whereas the Manx run them as an option. At last year's event, the 400s occupied the first ten places, the leading 125 being Tony Cawte.

Congratulations are continuing to be received by Dr David Stevens, the head of the Isle of Man's Motor Sports Unit, who received the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Dr Stevens has been the driving force behind many of the substantial improvements in medical services at the large array of motor sports in the Island, but chiefly at the TT and Manx Grand Prix. He is also a respected member of the FIM International Medical Panel.

Full grids are assured in most races. The Senior has 116 riders entered, the Junior 115, the Junior and Lightweight Classic 111 and the Lightweight and Ultra-Lightweight 108. The Senior Classic is not quite full at 89 but there is an encouraging 75 in the Newcomers.

Fifty-eight riders have lapped in under 20 minutes in the Manx Grand Prix. The outright lap record stands to Mick Skene (600 Suzuki) at 119.24mph during last year's runner-up Senior ride. Then it's Mark Parrett (750 Kawasaki) 118.93mph, Ian Pattinson (750 Kawasaki) 117.87mph, Davy Morgan (600 Yamaha) 117.64mph, Colin Breeze (750 Kawasaki) 117.48mph and Ryan Farquhar (750 Kawasaki) 117.21. Fastest 250 is Pete Turnbull at 114.05mph achieved in the 2000 Junior.

Thirty-two riders have lapped at over 100mph in the Classic. Bob Heath (Matchless) tops the list at 106.74mph from 1997, followed by Bill Swallow (Norton) at 106.41mph in 2000 and Glen English (Norton) at 106.21mph also in 2000. Best 350 is Bill Swallow (Aermacchi) at 102.23mph from 1996 and quickest 250 Bob Jackson (Suzuki) at 100.90 in 1996.

Continued progression to good TT performances by the cutting of teeth in the Manx Grand Prix was re-emphasised by the outstanding 2003 TT double by Adrian Archibald. Although he didn't win the Manx, he lapped at 117.18mph in 1996 on a 600cc Honda. At this year's TT, he did a marvellous Formula One and Senior double on Hector Neill's TAS Suzukis including a lap at 126.82mph while pulling in for his first refuelling stop in the Senior. The improvement in lap time over the seven years was a staggering 87.1 seconds! Other recent examples of rapid MGP-to-TT progress are Richard Quayle (2002 Lightweight TT winner) and Ryan Farquhar (2003 Junior lap record).

A silver lining to the cloud which prevented 26-year-old Co. Donegal's Raymond Porter riding in the TT comes with his renewed option to have another year at the Manx. The 2002 Senior Newcomers' winner had intended to ride in five classes at the TT but an injury in an early season race in Ireland sidelined him. So he's now down to ride 600cc Suzukis under the banner of Hockney Stevens Investment Services (Junior) and Robinson Concrete Products (Senior). His best lap is 114.74mph and he is the Senior Newcomers' race record holder at 112.43mph.

A major in the British Army is competing in the Newcomers. Thirty-two-year-old Jamie Clarke is a Staff Officer grade two working in the Headquarters of the Royal Logistic Corps in Camberley, where he will remain for the next two years. He has represented Britain in Alpine Ski Racing and takes part in sailing, water ski-ing, windsurfing and athletics. He will ride an R6 Yamaha for JRC Racing in the Senior Newcomers and the Junior and Senior races. He has previously ridden in the British Production and Superstock Championships.
