Stay Alert, Stay Alive - Mgp 2011 Road Safety Campaign Launched 17 August 2011

The Department of Infrastructure and the Isle of Man Constabulary have officially launched the MGP 2011 road safety campaign.

As this year’s TT was the centenary of the mountain course a special strap line “Meet your mates, not your maker” was used. For the MGP campaign the Road Safety Team has reverted to its 2010 TT campaign strap line: ‘Stay Alert Stay Alive’, this time featuring a series of hard-hitting images of real crash scenes from Police archives. The strap line presents a concise and hard hitting message which, coupled with the campaign imagery, should leave a lasting impression on residents and visitors alike.

Phil Gawne, Minister for Infrastructure said:

“The key message from the Road Safety Team to local and visiting motorcycle enthusiasts is to enjoy the Grand Prix but make sure that you stay safe on the Island’s roads and ride according to the conditions and don’t drink and ride.”

The campaign will be backed up by newspaper and radio advertising. Billboards and posters will also be placed around the Island and on the Manx Grand Prix course reiterating the message of ‘Stay Alert, Stay Alive’.

Inspector Terry Stephen, Head of the Roads Policing Unit said:

“We are expecting an increased attendance at this year’s Manx Grand Prix. With the increase in visitors on our roads comes an increased risk. Our aim is to keep the roads safe throughout the festival and we will be working closely with the Department of Infrastructure to do this. I would, as always, remind everyone that the Snaefell Mountain Road remains two-way throughout the fortnight and advise people not to travel over the mountain against the course unless they absolutely have to.”
“The Roads Policing Unit will be working with increased numbers of Officers in order to keep driving/riding standards high and road users safe. We will be strictly enforcing speed limits and looking to identify anti-social driving/riding at the earliest opportunity.”

The Mountain Road will remain two-way for the duration of the Manx Grand Prix unlike for the TT when the Mountain Road was made one-way due to the high number of visitors on the Island for the TT festival. Two large billboards have been placed at the Ramsey Hairpin to remind motorists that the Mountain Road is two-way. It is also important to remember that there are prohibited and restricted areas around the MGP course which are marked with clear warning signs. Spectators are required to keep clear of these areas for their own safety and that of the racers during MGP races and practice.

The Road Safety Team will be organising static displays at various locations around the Island with the Team’s promotional vehicle and anyone can visit us to discuss their road safety issues.
