Senior Win for Davy Morgan 3 September 2004

Thirty-three-year-old Saintfield lorry driver Davy Morgan (750 Investasure Suzuki) won today's Steam Packet-sponsored Senior Manx Grand Prix in blustery but mainly dry conditions. He beat Ian Pattinson (750 Kawasaki) by 2.8 seconds with Preston's Alan Jackson third a further 10.1 seconds back after a fantastically close four laps.

The early lead was taken by Jackson, aboard the 750 Kawasaki which carried the winners of the past two Seniors, Paul Duckett and Mark Parrett. Jackson and his starting partner, Ian Pattinson from Weardale commenced a battle on the road as well as on time. And at Ramsey, Pattinson had edged narrowly ahead, with Davy Morgan from Saintfield third on the 750cc Investasure Suzuki.

At the end of the first lap, Lancashire's Jackson had roared back past his Yorkshire rival in a re-enactment of the Battle of the Roses. Both broke the 120mph mark from a standing start, with Jackson marginally quicker at a lap record 120.55mph to Pattinson's 120.42mph. Trying extremely hard was Morgan, whose task was to try to get the Kawasakis in sight on the longer stretches such as Cronk-y-Voddy. But at the pace being set, it was a vain hope.

The lead was 1.2 seconds, with Morgan a further 12 seconds back and Dean Silvester (600 Yamaha), Seamus Greene (600 Suzuki) and John Burrows (750 Suzuki) the second three.

At the end of lap two Jackson led by just four-fifths of a second, with both riders in the Stop Box together as they pulled in for fuel. As they left, Jackson stole an advantage of 200 yards but with a better halt Morgan picked up enough to inherit the lead as they reached Glen Helen for the third time.

At Ramsey it was Morgan, Pattinson and Jackson, but the intervals were slight. They had pulled an amazing 50 seconds clear of the rest of the field as the extra urge of the 750cc machines was put fully to the test.

One lap to go and the lead changed again. Jackson and Pattinson were still together on the road and had dropped Morgan by two seconds. Jackson's advantage was what it was on the road, i.e. half a second, with Morgan striving to make back up. Silvester, Kenneth McCrae from Stanstead (600 Yamaha) and Burrows were fourth, fifth and sixth, with Maria Costello coming up fast and holding eighth place.

At Glen Helen Morgan grabbed back the lead by two seconds with Jackson and Pattinson in that order. What a race! All eyes were on the top three as they raced the final 28 miles, with the ultimate outcome anything but certain. The three 750s were being ridden to the limit.

Ramsey saw even more excitement as Pattinson arrived just ahead of Jackson, but it was Morgan who led by seven seconds as the trio tackled the Mountain for the final time. Silvester, McCrae and Burrows were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, but well over a minute in arrears.

There was drama at the end, as Pattinson crossed the line well clear of Jackson, but with a new MGP outright lap record of 120.68mph Morgan took the win by 2.8 seconds at a race average speed of 118.67mph. Morgan was surprised at his speed, describing conditions as "wild", a reference to the stiff breezes round most of the course.

Fourth was Silvester, fifth McCrae, sixth Burrows. The winner's speed constituted a new race record speed of 118.67mph.
