Institution of Water Officers to visit the Isle of Man 7 October 2005

From 6th to 9th of October the Isle of Man will play host to a conference for the Institution of Water Officers. The title of the conference is ‘Risk and Our Environment (Opportunity or Challenge)?’ and will include talks on a wide variety of themes from drinking water safety plans to risk managing the T.T. races.

A number of key Island figures will give presentations, including Patrick Heaton-Armstrong (Chief Executive, Isle of Man Water Authority), Richard Young (Planning Manager, Isle of Man Water Authority), John Aspden (Chief Executive of IoM Financial Supervision Commission), and Geoff Cannell. The weekend will encompass a broad scope of subjects and those attending will also hear speeches from visiting key figures including John Fawell MBE, Professor Alan Alexander (Chairman of Scottish Water), Profesor Jeni Colbourne MBE (UK Chief Drinking Water Inspector), Tony Smith (OFWAT Director of Competition and Consumer Affairs) and Des Coates (Chairman of Flask Group). The weekend will open with a ‘Welcome’ to the Island by Hon Donald Gelling CBE, MLC, the Chief Minister of Isle of Man Government and be closed with a black tie dinner with the after dinner speaker His Honour the Deemster Kerruish QC (Head of the IOM Judiciary).

The weekend will be based at the Hilton Hotel, but the visitors will not spend the entire weekend indoors! On the Friday afternoon they will tour Sulby Dam and the new £15.3 million Sulby Treatment Works, which was officially opened on 1st October.

Patrick Heaton-Armstrong, Chief Executive of Isle of Man Water Authority commented “It is an exciting opportunity for the Isle of Man to host the conference. The Institution of Water Officers facilitates the exchange of information on issues such as risk management and care for the environment, which are extremely relevant to our present operations. The conference is an opportunity not only to exchange information, but also to demonstrate to delegates from England some of the Island’s own facilities, such as the new Water Treatment Works at Sulby.”
