Department of Transport Wins Prince Michael Award For TT2006 Road Safety Campaign 15 November 2006

The TT 2006 Road Safety Campaign run by the Department of Transport earlier this year has been recognised by the prestigious Prince Michael Road Safety Awards.

The Road Safety Team will be presented with their special award for the ‘Take ITT Easy 2006’ Campaign at the Manx Museum on Wednesday 15th November 2006.

The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognise achievements and innovations which will improve road safety. Each year the most outstanding examples of international road safety initiatives are given public recognition via this scheme. All road users, including pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, bikers and horse riders are asked to identify the initiatives which make our roads safer and nominate the people behind them for an award.

In addition to the presentation at the Museum, Captain Andrew Douglas who was the Department Member for Highways during the 2006 TT and Road Safety Manager, Gordon Edwards, have also been invited to meet HRH Prince Michael of Kent at a formal presentation at the Savoy Hotel, London on 12th December, when they will be congratulated personally for the team’s achievements this year.

The Awards are organised by RoadSafe, a UK-based organisation that is comprised of leading companies in the motor and transport industries in the UK, Government representatives and other road safety professionals.

Adrian Walsh, a director of RoadSafe, is flying over to the Island on 15th November to present the special award to the Department of Transport. He said,

“I am delighted to make this special visit to the Isle of Man to congratulate the team that worked so hard to build such a strong campaign that obviously struck a chord with the 10,000 bike enthusiasts who visited the Island for the TT Festival this year.”

Road Safety Manager, Gordon Edwards comments,

“Our ‘Take ITT Easy’ campaign was designed to remind everyone to drive safely during a fortnight when people might just get carried away and forget to watch their speed. The consequences of mimicking your favourite TT rider and causing an accident via excessive speed can be devastating. However we feel our road safety campaign was pitched at the right level to encourage people to take notice of our message to ‘Take ITT Easy’. We would like to think our efforts contributed in a significant way to a fatal free TT Festival in 2006.”
“We would like to thank our colleagues in the Department of Transport and our Partner Agencies and Companies for their invaluable input in this campaign. This award recognises all their hard work in getting the message across to local and visiting TT fans, right across the Island. I am extremely grateful to them all.”
