Fire fighting training session for TT travelling marshals 18 May 2007

TT Travelling Marshals attended a training session at Douglas Fire Station yesterday (Thursday) evening in preparation for the TT centenary.

Bike on fireThe group received instruction in basic firefighting techniques and gained practical experience extinguishing fires involving motorcycles and running fuel fires. Presentations were made on the management and command of incidents which stimulated positive debate.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Bruce Kirkham said:

‘The travelling marshals perform an essential role in the safety of the TT races and we were pleased to host the evening and contribute towards the enhancement of their professionalism. Following last year’s TT when a fire engine was deployed onto the course to assist with a fire involving a sidecar outfit, we all learned a considerable amount from dealing with that incident and decided it would be beneficial to provide training prior to this year’s event.’

Chief travelling marshal Dick Cassidy paid tribute to the fire service:

Bike fire training session‘We have had a great evening and have gained valuable experience in firefighting techniques. Whilst we hope we won’t need these skills this year, we are better prepared to deal with an incident from what we have learned tonight.’

The evening was supported by the Department of Home Affairs Member with responsibility for the Fire Service, George Waft MLC, a keen motorcyclist, who attended the practical demonstration.

He commented:

‘The Department is very proud of the Fire and Rescue Service which provides a dedicated and professional essential service to the Isle of Man. They, along with other emergency services, have been undergoing rigorous preparations for the forthcoming Centenary TT Festival and it is commendable that they have linked up with travelling marshals to provide this training. Everyone appreciates the work undertaken by marshals and travelling marshals, without whom the races would not be able to take place.’
