2007 Manx Grand Prix can go ahead, Government advises 8 August 2007

THE Isle of Man Government has agreed that the Manx Motorcycle Club can proceed with the 2007 Manx Grand Prix (MGP) motorcycle races, subject to safeguards against Foot and Mouth and continuing monitoring of the situation in the United Kingdom following the recent outbreak of the disease in Surrey.

The advice from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is that current risk levels are not high enough to justify cancellation of the event, provided appropriate bio-security measures are implemented.

DAFF’s view, endorsed by a special meeting of the Council of Ministers today (Wednesday August 8, 2007), has been welcomed by the Department of Tourism and Leisure, which supports the MGP in conjunction with race organisers the Manx Motorcycle Club.

Precautions to be taken in respect of the MGP include:

  • Closure of the Mountain section of the Course to spectators with the exception of a few specific fenced off areas.
  • Establishment of disinfection stations for marshals around the Course.
  • Advising landowners to extend the period which livestock is moved away from the Course to cover a week prior and two weeks following the event.
  • Advising spectators to avoid being close to livestock; and use town areas and organised vantage point as much as possible.
