Event management safety course 19 May 2008

Chief Inspector Peter YoungCONCERTED efforts are being made to ensure the Island’s major public events take place in a safe and structured environment.

With TT 2008 and a busy summer season on the horizon, the Department of Home Affairs recently arranged the visit of two leading authorities in event management. Fourteen separate organisations attended a three-day seminar at the Claremont Hotel delivered by Ron Woodham and Jon Wort of the Emergency Planning College in York.

The course covered a wide range of topics such as crowd dynamics, operational planning, risk assessment and liability issues. It was aimed at producing a safe and consistent approach to running events that involve a large number of people.

The strategic and practical lessons learnt are already being put into practice in preparation for some of this summer’s main attractions. This should prove particularly beneficial ahead of TT 2008, as well as for regional events such as carnivals, fun days and concerts.

The course was co-ordinated by Peter Young, Chief Inspector - Operational Support Services, who said:

‘It was a real coup to bring two experts in this field to the Island. It is the first time we have attempted to stage a course on this scale and I’m delighted with the way things went.’

A total of 28 people were in attendance on a full-time basis and a further six visited for specific sessions. Delegates represented the emergency services, Government departments, local authorities and private companies. It is hoped that a multi-agency approach will lead to greater levels of consistency in terms of event planning.

Chief Inspector Young said:

‘Everybody on the course worked very hard and there was excellent communication between the different organisations. The feedback was very positive and the knowledge gained is already being put to good use. The aim is to encourage more events to take place in the Isle of Man and for them to be organised in a safe and structured manner.’
