Young actors bring street to life during TT 22 June 2009

Talented young thespians from the Manx National Youth Theatre performed in Strand Street during the TT, raising £2,300 in seven days.

Thirty of the MNYT's 100 members gave up their time to sing, dance and perform and had a great time.

The money raised will go towards the busy club's many forthcoming events, including the Dracula Rock Show, DNA, The Winter's Tale and Kick Off - all due to be performed at Douglas Youth Centre in Kensington Road in July and as part of the Summer Festival of Plays at the Ampitheatre on Douglas Head throughout August.

The MNYT is also taking part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival in October and young actors Jon Paul Christian and Dan Palmer recently attended a training day at Liverpool's Everyman Theatre in preparation. The Isle of Man is a venue for the Britain-wide festival for the first time. Several secondary schools are also taking part.

It has already been a busy year for MNYT members, who performed a scene from the Merchant of Venice on the London Eye as part of a launch event for the Shakespeare Schools Festival in May and staged their own, two-hour extravaganza, Ctrl Alt Del, over two nights at the Gaiety Theatre.

Members of the MNYT last week participated in the Theatrix production of Seven Sided Dice at the Gaiety, performing, painting scenery and working on sound and lighting.

Twenty members of MNYT will be attending the Youth Theatre Festival in Burnley in October as invited guests of the renowned Burnley Youth Theatre.

The MNYT - run by the Department of Education - meets at Douglas Youth Centre on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7.30pm for young people aged eight to 11; 7.30pm-9pm for ages 11 to 14; 7pm-9pm for Youth Shakespeare. There are also dance sessions and Soundcheck for budding musicians. MNYT also meets in the south of the Island on Mondays.

All sessions cost £1.

The MNYT thanks Recency Travel for its support of its TT week event.
