Mountain Safe 21 April 2011

Over the last few years there have been a number of crashes involving motorcycles just prior to TT, on or near the Mountain Course. The Isle of Man Constabulary and the Department of Infrastructure are pleased to announce a special initiative in the run up to TT.

As the better weather approaches there is an increase in traffic on the stretch of Mountain Road between Ramsey and Douglas. Typically this peaks during the Easter and May holidays and invariably due to the increased levels of traffic and the way in which people use the road means that there is an increase in collisions. The Isle of Man Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit together with Department of Infrastructure and other agencies are planning to combat these issues with a partnership approach. The publicity image shows a rider heading from Douglas to Ramsey to remind all road users that the Mountain Road is two way except during the TT festival.

Mr Phil Gawne Minister for Infrastructure said

“Traditionally the last Bank Holiday before TT is when those Manx bikers who have stored their machine during the winter take it for the first ride of the year. So if you are riding or driving just take that extra second to look for bikes before making a manoeuvre. If it is your first outing spend a little time checking your machine, especially tyre pressures and the condition of the tyres, your fluid levels are all topped up, chain is lubricated and properly adjusted and finally practice a couple of stops to ensure your brakes are fully efficient”.

Inspector Britton said

“We will do everything we possibly can to reduce casualties on the Mountain at this time of year. Together we are launching Mountain Safe; this initiative is not just about enforcement and increased officer presence it is about asking people to take responsibility for their own conduct on the Mountain. Bikers make up a larger proportion of traffic on the Mountain and they are, by their nature, vulnerable. They represent a disproportionately high number of casualties."

Mountain safe will run at the weekends from April 22nd to Monday 2nd May.
