TT 2006 3 June 2006

Racing gets underway today in the 2006 Isle of Man TT. With both the outright solo and sidecar lap records being broken, albeit unofficially, in practising another week of high speeds seems likely.

John McGuinness from Morecambe, who holds the outright lap record at 127.68 miles an hour, will start as favourite for today's Jester Interactive TT Superbike Race, particularly as he won the event last year and heads the practice leaderboard. McGuinness will be looking to add to his tally of eight TT victories and will have gained even more confidence from his record-breaking lap of 17 minutes 42.73 seconds (127.81) which he achieved in Wednesday night’s practice session.

Second on the practice leaderboard is Guy Martin whose top speed of 126.799 came on Thursday afternoon. Martin was sixth last year and has been recording some impressive speeds this time round.

New Zealander Bruce Anstey is third fastest at 126.146 followed by Ian Lougher, Ian Hutchinson and Martin Finnegan, the latter having been third in 2005. The rest of the top ten is made up of Carl Rennie, Jason Griffiths, Australian Cameron Donald and Manxman Paul Hunt.

The six-lap 226 miles race is scheduled to be flagged off at one o'clock and the big question is can McGuinness, or one of the others, break the existing course record - this time officially - or how far can they go towards the magical first 130 miles an hour lap?
