Three Manx movies get local premieres 14 November 2005

The growing number of local people now involved in the Island’s flourishing film industry will soon be able to see the fruits of their labours up on the big screen at the Broadway Cinema. Three Isle of Man co-financed and co-produced films will be showing at The Broadway Cinema, Villa Marina in between now and Christmas. The three films to be getting their local premieres are The Libertine, Keeping Mum and Lassie.

The Libertine’s release on 18th November (certificate 18) is attracting huge amounts of publicity for the Island with a feature in The Times and eight nominations at the British Independent Film Awards. Johnny Depp plays John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, who received posthumous acclaim after living a drunken and debauched life. All Isle of Man filming took place within Island Studios in April last year. Approximately 300 local extras took part in the film, working alongside cast members Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton and John Malkovich.

The second of the three films to screen locally is Keeping Mum, starring Rowan Atkinson, Dame Maggie Smith, Patrick Swayze and Kristin Scott-Thomas. The plot revolves around the life of Reverend Walter Goodman (Rowan Atkinson) who is determined to write the perfect sermon but he comically and frustratingly ignores his family in the process until Grace Hawkins (Dame Maggie Smith) arrives to put everything in order in her own unorthodox fashion. The comedy drama will be screening at the Broadway from December 2nd.

Finally, Lassie starring Peter O’Toole and Samantha Morton, will be released on 16th December in time for the Christmas market. Based on the original story, Lassie is a wonderful family film which features an extensive amount of the beautiful Manx Countryside.

Isle of Man Film’s Hilary Dugdale said “These three films certainly cater for all sections of the public. Going to see Lassie will be a wonderful Christmas treat for the family and The Libertine’s adult arthouse content will certainly be of great interest to film buffs and Johnny Depp fans everywhere. Nicely positioned in the middle is Keeping Mum, a very black but very heart-warming comedy drama. All three films are a credit to all local people who worked on them.”

Isle of Man Film has seen a flood of film releases in the last quarter of 2005. Since September 2005, On A Clear Day and Revolver have been released with The Libertine, Keeping Mum and Lassie due to be released shortly.

On A Clear Day, which tells the story of Frank, an ex-shipyard worker who decides to swim the Channel, gained excellent critical acclaim and was introduced as the prestigious opening film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival by Festival founder and Hollywood legend Robert Redford.

And whilst gangster movie Revolver attracted some criticism, it still managed to take US$2.7 million in its first two weekends with Redbus, the film’s distributor expecting a ‘massive cult following’ when the film is released on DVD.
