Promoting Manx food 23 September 2005

    The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is organising a workshop to explore opportunities to promote Manx food, both on and off the Island. The workshop is planned to take place at the International Business School on Monday, 17th October from 12.30pm to 2.00pm.

    “We produce lots of fresh, healthy and tasty food on the Island, and this workshop is intended to explore how we can make Manx food easier for the Island’s consumers to find and buy” said DAFF Minister, Phil Gawne MHK.

    “I would like to see restaurants and shops being recognised for promoting Manx food,” continued the Minister. “We currently give hotels a quality rating. Perhaps something similar could be applied to all food outlets reflecting the proportion of food they source locally, so consumers know where they can find top quality Manx products.”

    “This is just one of a number of ideas,” said the Minister, “and I look forward to seeing a broad range of issues discussed at this workshop. We can pool our ideas, and then pool our efforts into giving them practical effect.”

    The workshop will be looking at three main areas –

    - the potential for the industry to work together in such Manx food initiatives;

    - the practicality of adopting a single brand for food sales in the Island, and possibly a different brand for off-Island sales;

    - ways that the public, retailers and the catering trade can be encouraged to expect and ask for high quality Manx products.

    Invitations are being extended to food producers in the Island. The invitations are accompanied by some extracts from two surveys undertaken by the Department this summer. More than three hundred questionnaires were filled in by members of the public at the Island’s agricultural shows.

    Results suggested that there was a lower level of Manx food loyalty amongst younger people or amongst more recent arrivals. The aim of the workshop will be to identify ways to build the profile and value of Manx food to all consumers in the Island.
