Visit of the German Ambassador 5 September 2005

The Minister for Trade & Industry, Alex Downie MLC was delighted to host a luncheon for the German Ambassador, Thomas Matussek, during his recent visit to the Isle of Man. The luncheon was held at the prestigious Douglas headquarters of Doehle (IOM) Ltd, one of the larger ship managers in the Isle of Man and part of a major ship owner in Germany.

Senior representatives of a cross-section of business from manufacturing to shipping and e-business attended and provided Mr Matussek with the recent economic history of the Isle of Man as a background to current developments. Subjects which were covered included the success of the financial services sector and the importance of regulation to maintain the image of the Isle of Man as a respected business centre. The Ambassador heard how manufacturers of high value added products have continued to grow and develop, using existing skills and expertise, to become prime suppliers to globally recognised customers and continue to go from strength to strength. He was also advised of the Isle of Man’s e-business strategy to utilise a world class telecommunications structure which enables the Island to overcome previous geographical limitations.

Mr Downie said ‘I wanted to bring to the Ambassador’s attention the calibre and diversity of commercial activity which we have in the Isle of Man. We had a wide-ranging discussion and I believe Mr Matussek was most impressed with the information we gave him and he now has a better understanding of the Island’s industrial base.’

He added ‘I am grateful to Jorg Vanselow, Chief Executive Officer of Doehle (IOM) Ltd for providing the venue for the lunch. We have a number of German companies here in the Isle of Man and it was good to be able to present the Island as a quality jurisdiction in which such companies choose to set up a business operation.’

On expressing his thanks, Mr Matussek indicated that he would be pleased to assist in resolving any issues arising from doing business in the German market in the future.
