Results of the Tobacco Consultation released 26 August 2005

A public consultation carried out by the Department of Health and Social Security’s Public Health Directorate has revealed that a huge 91.9% of households and 88.1% of businesses would support a law that would ban smoking in enclosed spaces.

The consultation received an unprecedented response with over 10,700 responses from a wide range of respondents from individual households to businesses, government and non-Government organisations.

The consultation has also revealed that of almost 3,000 responses received via the internet, 92.97% think that further action is needed to reduce the exposure to second-hand smoke (91.8% households and 88.8% business), and 92.34% would support legislation prohibiting smoking in enclosed spaces.

Although 40.07% of internet respondents, 36.6% of households and 36% of businesses think that there should be exemptions to any such legislation, the majority of respondents in each category (57.5% - Households, 57% - Businesses and 52.08% - Internet) believe that there should be no exemptions.

The consultation was carried out in response to growing concerns about the dangers of second hand smoke and the escalating health care costs associated with treating smoking related illnesses.

Steve Rodan, MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said, “The results have confirmed that there is an overwhelming public demand to protect those at risk from second-hand smoke. Through the implementation of the Tobacco Strategy, we hope to meet this demand.”

Dr Paul Emerson, Public Health Consultant said, “These results provide a massive boost to the Public Health drive to restrict exposure to dangerous second-hand smoke. The Isle of Man Tobacco Strategy will have a noticeable impact on the Isle of Man health status within 10 years.”
